Bonded

The church was where it was all at this evening for our first annual Ladies' Night, after much preparation and anticipation (in abundant measures especially from Erinmarie who was instrumental in getting the whole thing going and a key committee member; she was utterly stellar in her arrangements and planning). The ladies started arriving at 6.30 and by 7 pm we were officially ready to start with 24 ladies (of varying ages from 5-70+) present. We had pegged each lady as they were coming in and also labelled them with a biblical character, both by way of ice-breakers; the 'steal the peg' game was supposed to be conducted with elegance and subtlety but these gals had their competitive edges freshly sharpened. I take no responsibility for bruised shins or egos but at least there was no shedding of blood. Our 'mystery guest speaker' was our very own pastor's wife who did a short talk on the topic of worry (she was nervous - the female circle can be a tough crowd but they were all very forgiving), encouraging the ladies to turn their burdens over to the Lord and not take them back again - which we do when we fret. After the talk there was a scavenger hunt and random fact game, followed by a DVD. And then, for those who were still with us, hot chocolate with marshmallows. By 11 pm or so all the non-sleepers had made their way home; 7 of us were left to brave the church floor and the chocolate game. The company was so enjoyable that we stayed up chatting and building a ridiculously difficult puzzle until 12.30 - and I'm pleased (and relieved) to report that once the lights were out there was less than a minute's shuffling, giggling or talking. My experience of sleepovers had given me vastly different expectations! Thank you to all the ladies who attended who made the evening so enjoyable, particularly the older generation whose generally ladylike and respectable appearances belie their confirmed jocularity. Is that our "dickied up" hat I saw on Erinmarie's head?
